If she’s being hesitant and dodgy, it could be that there was something else wrong earlier in the interaction and she’s kind of hoping you’ll go away. If that’s the case, you can plow through to get some experience, or politely eject.

If she seems to be enjoying the interaction, but answers that she’s trying to figure out what she wants to do, I’d probably just follow up on that thread until I get something to work with.

For instance, I could ask, “so what are some of the things you think you might want to study.” Then just pick one of her answers and go with that as before.

Or you could change the subject to hobbies and then riff off one of her hobbies — “Oh, so if I absolutely needed a crochetted potholder right now, you could make one for me.”

If she’s into the conversation at all, she’ll respond positively. If not, sometimes you’re better off looking elsewhere. It could be she’s just not into you, or is dealing with her own problems right now, or has a BF she’s madly in love with, or whatever.
